Pilot Taking Selfies Sparks Mid-Air Collision, Fine Reduced
A South Korean audit has revealed that a 2021 mid-air collision between two F-15K fighter jets was caused by pilots filming videos and taking selfies. The incident occurred near Daegu during a commemorative "last flight" for a wingman pilot. While attempting to get a better camera angle, the wingman performed an abrupt maneuver that led to a collision with the lead aircraft, resulting in 880 million won ($596,000) in damages.
The pilot, who now flies for a commercial airline, was originally ordered to pay the full repair cost. However, the Board of Audit and Inspection reduced his fine to 88 million won (10%), ruling that the Air Force shared responsibility for failing to regulate personal camera use and noting that the practice of filming flights was widespread at the time.
